A Father’s Commitment to His Son with Down Syndrome: One Man’s Journey
Every day, babies are born all over the world with different conditions. Each one is unique and deserving of love, care, and attention.
Unfortunately, some people may not fully understand this and may feel uncertain or even unwilling to care for their child if they are born with a condition that isn’t considered “typical.”
Despite the progress we’ve made as a society, babies with Down syndrome still face challenges due to outdated beliefs and misconceptions about the condition. However, one father in Russia is working to change that.

Evgeny Anisimov, 33, is raising his son, Misha, who has Down syndrome, on his own. Evgeny is determined to challenge the stigma surrounding Down syndrome and show that every child, regardless of their condition, is precious and worthy of love.
After Misha was born, Evgeny and his wife were informed by doctors that their son might have Down syndrome. “When I first heard about it, I didn’t know what to do,” Evgeny shared in an interview with Bored Panda. “I thought I needed to stay strong, support my wife, and wait for the test results.”
Evgeny admitted that when the diagnosis was confirmed, he felt a mixture of emotions, but he soon realized that his love for his son remained unchanged. “Nothing really changed in my life. I still had my health, my skills, and my ability to support my family,” he explained. “I realized that my son’s life and future were important, and I had to take responsibility.”

Determined to learn more about Down syndrome, Evgeny discovered that people with the condition in other parts of the world are often well-supported and can lead fulfilling lives. This further reinforced his decision to care for Misha.
For Evgeny, abandoning his son was never an option. However, his wife did not feel the same way, and the couple eventually separated. Now, Evgeny is raising Misha on his own, with a focus on providing him with the love and care he deserves.
Evgeny shared his perspective: “When a child is born, they need to know they are wanted. I tell Misha every day, ‘Yes, you are wanted!’ Raising him, even alone, is something any parent would do.”
Through his journey, Evgeny hopes to raise awareness about Down syndrome and encourage others to view children with the condition with compassion and understanding. “I want people to understand that having a child with Down syndrome is not a burden,” he said. “It’s not something to fear or feel overwhelmed by. It’s just part of our lives, and we can manage it.”
Evgeny’s story is one of love, determination, and a commitment to showing the world that children with Down syndrome can live fulfilling lives. His hope is that by sharing his experience, others who are facing similar challenges will feel supported and encouraged.
