Barbra Streisand and James Brolin Reveal a Surprising Detail About Their 25-Year Marriage
This year marks 25 years of marriage for Barbra Streisand and James Brolin—a milestone that highlights their enduring love story. The couple has often been candid about their relationship, especially about the joys of finding love later in life. Recently, they opened up about a personal detail that they had kept private for years.
A Love That Began with a Blind Date
Their story began in an unexpected way—on a blind date. Streisand was told she’d be meeting a man with a full head of hair and a beard. When James Brolin arrived clean-shaven and bald, it caught her off guard.
In typical Streisand fashion, she didn’t hold back. She told him his hair was “all messed up.” Rather than taking offense, Brolin was charmed by her honesty. From that moment, he felt she was someone truly special.
While Brolin was immediately drawn to Streisand, she took a bit more time to be sure. But their bond deepened quickly, and in 1998, they were married in a private ceremony surrounded by loved ones.
Past Relationships and Blended Families
Both stars brought life experience to the relationship. Streisand was previously married to actor Elliot Gould from 1961 to 1973, with whom she shares a son, Jason Gould. Brolin had been married twice before—first to casting agent Jane Agee for 20 years, and later to Jane Smithers.
From his previous marriages, Brolin has three children: Josh, Jess, and Molly Brolin, and he is also a grandfather to Eden, Trevor, Westlyn, and Chapel.

A Romantic Revelation
In a recent interview with Gayle King on CBS Mornings, the couple reflected on their 25 years together—and Brolin shared a surprising fact that caught many off guard.
Before meeting Streisand, Brolin revealed he had chosen to be celibate for three years. “I had been—literally it’s a wild word—but I had been celibate, saying, ‘Who needs this?’” he said during the interview.
Streisand playfully responded, “You’re not supposed to tell that!”

King, clearly surprised, asked, “For three years?” Brolin explained that after two divorces, he had lost interest in pursuing a new relationship that might not last.
“I had no interest in getting involved in a lousy situation,” he said. But everything changed when a friend encouraged him to meet Streisand. “I knew I had to marry her,” Brolin shared.
Still, it took three proposals before Streisand said yes.
A Love That Stands the Test of Time

Today, Brolin remains completely devoted to his wife. Speaking about their relationship, he once said, “Every night is a new adventure. Sleeping is a waste of time—I can’t wait to see her again in the morning.”
Their story is a reminder that love can come when you least expect it—and that honesty, patience, and mutual respect are the cornerstones of a lasting relationship.
