Actor James Darren Passes Away at 88
James Darren, the beloved actor and singer known for his roles in classic films like Gidget and television series such as T.J. Hooker and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, has passed away at the age of 88.
According to TMZ, Darren died peacefully in his sleep at Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles on Monday. While an official cause of death has not been confirmed, his son, journalist Jim Moret, reportedly told TMZ that Darren had been experiencing heart issues and was a patient in Cedars-Sinai’s cardiac unit.
Darren was initially hospitalized for an aortic valve replacement, but doctors determined that he was too weak to safely undergo the procedure. He was discharged and sent home, only to return to the hospital a short time later. Sadly, he passed away not long after.
His son Jim Moret reflected on his father’s passing, saying, “I always thought he would pull through because he was so cool. He was always cool.”

A Legendary Career in Hollywood
Born on June 8, 1936, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, James Darren rose to fame in the late 1950s, quickly establishing himself as a heartthrob. His breakthrough role came in 1959 when he starred as Jeffrey “Moondoggie” Matthews in Gidget, opposite Sandra Dee. The film’s success catapulted him into teen idol status, and he went on to reprise the role in two sequels: Gidget Goes Hawaiian (1961) and Gidget Goes to Rome (1963).
Darren’s popularity extended beyond the big screen, and he transitioned to television, where he enjoyed a prolific career. He starred in the science-fiction series The Time Tunnel (1966–1967) as Tony Newman, a scientist trapped in time, and later gained widespread recognition for his role as Officer Jim Corrigan in T.J. Hooker. He appeared in 66 episodes across four seasons alongside William Shatner and Heather Locklear.
In the 1990s, Darren delighted Star Trek fans with his recurring role as holographic lounge singer Vic Fontaine on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. His portrayal of the smooth, 1960s-inspired crooner was widely praised, and he performed several jazz standards throughout his run on the show, showcasing his talent as both an actor and singer.
