13-Year-Old Builds His Own Tiny House in His Backyard
Most middle schoolers spend their free time playing video games, hanging out with friends, or scrolling through social media. But 13-year-old Luke Thill from Dubuque, Iowa, had a very different idea—he built his own tiny house right in his parents’ backyard.
With determination, hard work, and creativity, Luke turned his vision into reality, completing his dream home for around $1,500. Now, he enjoys spending time in his cozy retreat, which is both functional and charming.

A Unique Hobby in a Digital Age
In an era where screens dominate much of kids’ free time, Luke took a different route. As he explained on his YouTube channel, his journey began one summer when he found himself bored and looking for a meaningful project. After researching tiny houses, he decided to take on the challenge of building one himself.
The Building Process
Luke spent about a year saving money and gathering materials for his tiny home. He mowed lawns, ran errands for neighbors, and even started an online fundraiser. Along the way, he also bartered for help—an electrician friend assisted with wiring in exchange for Luke cleaning out his garage.
To keep costs low, Luke sourced approximately 75% of the materials from recycled or leftover items. Some came from his grandmother’s house, while the front door was a gift from a family friend.

The Finished Tiny Home
Measuring 89 square feet, the house is 10 feet long and 5 ½ feet wide. It has electricity but no plumbing—yet. Luke envisions adding water and a bathroom in the future. Inside, the space is cleverly designed with a microwave, TV, a loft bed, and enough room for him to study and relax. A barbecue and flowers in the backyard add to its charm.
“I liked the minimalism,” Luke told The Des Moines Register. “And I wanted to have a house without a huge mortgage.”
His parents, while supportive, ensured that Luke took responsibility for the project. His father, Greg, saw it as a valuable learning experience.
“It was a chance for a kid to do something more than play video games or sports,” Greg said. “It teaches life lessons.”
Looking Ahead
Luke doesn’t plan to stop here. Inspired by his success, he hopes to build a slightly larger home when he starts college. Through his YouTube channel, he also encourages other young people to take on ambitious projects and follow their dreams.
“I want to show kids it’s possible to build at this age,” he said.
Luke’s story is an inspiring example of what determination, creativity, and hard work can achieve—even at a young age. His tiny house proves that with the right mindset, anything is possible.
