Bolo, a sweet three-year-old pit bull mix, was only meant to stay one day at the Hopkinsville Police Department. But sometimes life surprises you — and for Bolo, that short visit turned into a permanent home after he won over the hearts of everyone he met.

Before arriving at the police station, Bolo had spent two long months at a local animal shelter, patiently waiting for a family to choose him. That all changed when he became the first dog featured in a new program called “Paw-Trol Wednesdays,” launched by Royale Marfil, the Public Information Officer at the Hopkinsville PD. The goal was simple but powerful: spotlight one shelter dog each week to help them find a loving home. Bolo’s journey would prove just how meaningful this effort could be.

When Bolo first walked into the station, no one knew what to expect. But it didn’t take long for him to win everyone over. His friendly spirit and gentle nature quickly captured the attention of officers and staff alike. As he explored his new surroundings, his playful side blossomed, and smiles spread everywhere he went. Before long, the big question on everyone’s lips was: “Can we keep him?”

“He just warmed up to everyone so fast,” Marfil recalled. “Once he started playing, it was impossible not to fall in love with him. Everyone was saying, ‘We want him to stay.’”

Throughout the day, Bolo made friends with officers, soaking up belly rubs and head scratches. His cheerful energy lifted the whole office. After hours of fun, he finally curled up on the floor in Marfil’s office and fell into a deep, contented sleep — snoring like an old man, much to everyone’s amusement.

But when it was time to leave, Bolo’s reluctance was clear. He lowered his head and softly whimpered — he didn’t want to go back to the shelter. And truth be told, no one at the police department wanted to see him leave either.

That’s when Marfil brought up the idea to Chief Newby. Without hesitation, he said, “Yeah, why not? Let’s keep him.” And just like that, Bolo’s life changed forever.

The plan was set: during the day, Bolo would be the police department’s official mascot — greeting visitors, boosting morale, and spreading joy. At night, he’d go home with Marfil, ensuring he always had a warm, loving place to rest.

When Marfil took Bolo shopping for a collar and toys at PetSmart, it was like a switch flipped. “That’s when he really knew,” she said. “He was so happy — you could see it in his eyes. He finally felt chosen.”

In early November, Bolo was officially sworn in as the first Paw-trol Officer of the Hopkinsville Police Department. He even got his own title, adding a fun touch to his inspiring story. Since then, Bolo has become something of a beloved celebrity around the office.

Marfil jokes that her office has become Bolo’s territory. “People pop in just to see him,” she laughs. “It’s like I’m just sharing my space with him now.”

Bolo enjoys the attention, especially if it means treats. He’s quick to show up whenever a wrapper crinkles, eager for any snack he can get. “He’s basically a furry garbage disposal,” Marfil says with a smile. “Chips, granola bars, even cough drops — he wants to check it out.”

Though Bolo doesn’t have official police duties like the trained K-9 units, his role is just as important. His mission? To be himself — loving, warm, and a beacon of comfort.

“He has the biggest smile every day,” Marfil says. “Pet him, and his grin only gets bigger. On tough days, Bolo’s goofy smile makes everything just a little bit better.”

To everyone at Hopkinsville PD, Bolo isn’t just a dog — he’s family. His story is a beautiful reminder that sometimes, the best partnerships come from the most unexpected places. What started as a shelter dog’s hope for a second chance turned into a beloved team member living the life he always deserved.
