Woman Converts Boeing 747 into a Stunning Home
In an inspiring example of creativity and sustainability, a woman has transformed a decommissioned Boeing 747 airplane into a fully functional and visually striking home.
Joanna Stevens, a former architect with a passion for aviation, purchased the retired aircraft from an airline salvage yard and spent over two years redesigning its interior to serve as a modern, eco-friendly residence. Located on a scenic plot of land just outside Portland, Oregon, the unique home has quickly gained attention for its innovative design and unexpected charm.
A Dream Takes Flight
The idea began when Joanna visited an aviation museum and became captivated by the possibility of repurposing old aircraft. “I saw the potential for something completely different,” she said. “Why let these massive structures go to waste when they can become something beautiful?”
After acquiring the aircraft, Joanna carefully planned the renovation. The fuselage was reinforced and insulated, and large panoramic windows were installed to allow natural light. The aircraft’s original cockpit was preserved as a reading nook, and the spacious cabin now includes a full kitchen, bedroom, bathroom, and living area.
Sustainable and Stylish
In addition to its unique design, the home incorporates numerous eco-friendly features. Solar panels line the wings, rainwater is collected for gardening, and energy-efficient appliances help reduce the home’s carbon footprint.
“I wanted to build something that was both artistic and sustainable,” Joanna explained. “The plane already had the bones — I just had to reimagine the space.”
