Teenager Accused in Tragic High School Stabbing Released on Reduced Bail
A 17-year-old teenager, accused of fatally stabbing another student during a high school track competition, was released from custody after his bail was reduced.
Karmelo Anthony was granted release on Monday after a judge lowered his bail from $1 million to $250,000. Anthony posted bond and left Collin County Jail in a gray suit jacket and black shirt, maintaining a calm demeanor as he walked to a waiting vehicle.
When asked about Austin Metcalf, the 17-year-old who tragically passed away after the incident on April 2, Anthony did not respond. Metcalf died in his twin brother’s arms after being stabbed during the altercation.
The teenager is facing a first-degree murder charge for the death of Metcalf, who was stabbed in the chest during the interschool event. Anthony appeared in court on Monday.
Since the incident, his family has received significant support, raising over $415,000 to cover legal expenses, relocation, and security concerns due to the high level of public attention surrounding the case.

At the hearing, prosecutors questioned Anthony’s father, Andrew Anthony, about why the raised funds were not used to cover the bond. The family explained that they needed the money for their ongoing safety, as they had received threats and their personal information had been shared online.
Anthony’s attorney, Michael Howard, addressed the situation, saying that while the family had access to funds, it was not intended solely for the bond. He emphasized that the family needed to address their safety and financial stability.
As part of his release conditions, Anthony must wear an ankle monitor and seek court approval to leave his home.
Anthony’s parents shared that their son had a strong academic record and was the captain of both the football and track teams at his high school. They also stated that he had never been arrested prior to this incident.
Reports indicate that the altercation between Anthony and Metcalf began when Metcalf reportedly asked Anthony to move from a tent belonging to another team. The confrontation escalated when Anthony pulled out a knife after a brief physical exchange, resulting in the fatal stabbing. Anthony fled the scene but was later arrested.
In his statement to a school resource officer, Anthony said he was acting in self-defense.
This case continues to unfold, and many are hoping for a fair legal process for all involved.
