What It Might Mean When a Loved One Appears in Your Dream
Sooner or later, we all face the pain of losing someone we love. Grief is one of life’s most difficult journeys, and no two people experience it the same way. But one thing many people report during this time is surprisingly universal: dreaming of the person they lost.

These dreams often feel incredibly vivid—almost real—and can leave a lasting emotional impression. They raise questions many of us have quietly wondered: Could these dreams mean something more?
A Common but Powerful Experience
After a loss, people process grief in different ways. Some cry often, some turn inward, and others try to stay busy to keep the pain at bay. Yet, among all the differences in how we cope, many share this one unique experience: a dream where the person they lost appears—healthy, at peace, and sometimes delivering a comforting message.
This has led researchers and psychologists to explore whether such dreams are more than just memories resurfacing.
What Are Visitation Dreams?
Dr. Patrick McNamara, a professor of neurology and psychiatry at Boston University, refers to these moments as visitation dreams. These are dreams where someone who has passed appears vividly and meaningfully—often providing a deep emotional impact.
Dr. McNamara, who writes for Psychology Today, has even described his own visitation dreams after the loss of his parents. Though trained in science and initially skeptical, he admitted the experience felt undeniably real: “If I, as a skeptic, couldn’t shake the feeling that I had truly communicated with them—how much stronger must that feeling be for someone more spiritually inclined?”
What the Research Says
Visitation dreams are more common than many realize. A 2014 study in the American Journal of Hospice and Palliative Care found that these dreams often bring comfort, peace, and even healing to those grieving. Participants described seeing their loved ones happy, healthy, and sometimes delivering simple, peaceful messages.
In a 2016 Canadian study, nearly 70% of participants who lost loved ones described these dreams as powerful and meaningful. Many believed the dreams brought them closer to the person they had lost, and even strengthened their belief in an afterlife.
The Common Themes in Visitation Dreams
Psychologist Jennifer E. Shorter, who studied visitation dreams at the Institute of Transpersonal Psychology, identified four key characteristics:
-
The deceased appears healthy, vibrant, or as they were at their best.
-
The dream carries a strong sense of comfort or reassurance.
-
Communication is often nonverbal—felt more than spoken.
-
The overall feeling of the dream is peaceful, calm, and emotionally balanced.
These dreams can happen soon after a loss, or even years later. Some bring a sense of closure, while others feel like a visit from someone who still matters deeply.
Emotional Impact and Interpretation
For many, these dreams leave a lasting mark—sometimes comforting, sometimes bittersweet. Whether seen as a message from beyond or as a natural part of processing grief, the emotional weight they carry is undeniable.
They may not offer concrete answers, but they invite reflection and connection. And for many, they feel like one more moment to say what was left unsaid, or simply to feel the presence of a loved one again.
Have You Had One?
If you’ve ever dreamed of someone who has passed, you’re not alone. Whether it brought peace, comfort, or lingering questions, it’s a meaningful experience shared by many.
These dreams remind us that love doesn’t end—it evolves. And even after someone is gone, they may still find ways to be present in our lives, even if only for a fleeting moment in a dream.
